Funeral Mass Scheduled for April 26
Pope Francis's funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. local time in St. Peter's Square (4 a.m. ET) , in Saint Peter's Square. The service will be presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals. The ceremony will conclude with the Ultima commendatio and Valedictio rites, traditional prayers entrusting the pope's soul to God.
Public Viewing at St. Peter's Basilica
Beginning Wednesday, April 23, Pope Francis's body will lie in state at St. Peter's Basilica, allowing the faithful to pay their respects. This period of public mourning will continue until the funeral on Saturday.
A Departure from Tradition
In accordance with his wishes, Pope Francis will be buried at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, rather than the traditional burial site beneath St. Peter's Basilica. He will be the first pope in over a century to be interred outside the Vatican. Additionally, he requested a simpler burial, opting out of the customary triple coffin and elaborate ceremonies.
Global Attendance and Mourning
The funeral is expected to draw numerous world leaders and dignitaries, including President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, who have confirmed their attendance. The Vatican has declared a nine-day mourning period, known as Novendiale, during which various Vatican institutions, including museums and the Sistine Chapel, will be closed to the public.
