The Joyful Mysteries focus on the early life of Jesus and Mary. They are traditionally prayed on Mondays and Saturdays with the rosary.
These mysteries celebrate the joy of Christ's coming into the world.
The Five Joyful Mysteries
1. The Annunciation
Scripture: Luke 1:26-38
The angel Gabriel appears to Mary and announces that she will conceive and bear a son, Jesus. Mary responds: "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word."
Meditation: Mary's "yes" to God. We are called to trust in God's plan, even when we don't understand it.
2. The Visitation
Scripture: Luke 1:39-56
Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth, who is pregnant with John the Baptist. Elizabeth proclaims: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb."
Meditation: Mary brings Christ to others. We are called to carry Jesus into the world through our words and actions.
3. The Nativity
Scripture: Luke 2:1-20
Jesus is born in Bethlehem and laid in a manger. Angels appear to shepherds, announcing: "Today a savior has been born for you."
Meditation: God enters the world in humility. We are reminded that Christ comes to us in the simplest, most humble moments.
4. The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple
Scripture: Luke 2:22-38
Mary and Joseph present Jesus in the Temple. Simeon takes Jesus in his arms and proclaims: "My eyes have seen your salvation."
Meditation: Offering our lives to God. We are called to present ourselves—and everything we have—to the Lord.
5. The Finding of Jesus in the Temple
Scripture: Luke 2:41-52
After three days of searching, Mary and Joseph find the twelve-year-old Jesus in the Temple, teaching. Jesus says: "Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?"
Meditation: Seeking Jesus when we feel lost. We are reminded that Jesus is always waiting to be found. This mystery teaches us patience—trusting that we will find Christ when we seek him earnestly.

The Joyful Mysteries are traditionally prayed on Mondays and Saturdays.
They are especially meaningful during:
- Advent and Christmas (preparing for and celebrating Christ's birth)
- Times of new beginnings (birth, baptism, fresh starts)
- When you need hope and joy

- For each mystery:
- Announce the mystery
- Pray the Our Father
- Pray ten Hail Marys while meditating on the mystery
- Pray the Glory Be
- End with the Hail Holy Queen and closing prayers
