The Sorrowful Mysteries focus on the Passion and death of Jesus. They are traditionally prayed on Tuesdays and Fridays with the rosary.
These mysteries walk us through Christ's suffering and sacrifice for our salvation.
The Five Sorrowful Mysteries
1. The Agony in the Garden
Scripture: Matthew 26:36-46
In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prays: "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will."
Meditation: Jesus accepts the Father's will despite his fear. We are called to surrender our own will to God, especially in moments of suffering.
2. The Scourging at the Pillar
Scripture: Mark 15:15
Pilate has Jesus scourged before handing him over to be crucified.
Meditation: Jesus endures brutal physical suffering for our sins. We remember that he bore our pain and shame.
3. The Crowning with Thorns
Scripture: Matthew 27:27-31
The soldiers place a crown of thorns on Jesus' head and mock him, saying: "Hail, King of the Jews!"
Meditation: Jesus is humiliated and rejected. We are reminded that he understands our deepest wounds and shame.
4. The Carrying of the Cross
Scripture: John 19:17
Jesus carries his cross to Golgotha. Along the way, Simon of Cyrene is forced to help him.
Meditation: Jesus invites us to take up our own cross and follow him. We are called to carry our burdens with faith and trust.
5. The Crucifixion
Scripture: Luke 23:33-46
Jesus is crucified between two criminals. He cries out: "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." Then: "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit."
Meditation: Jesus gives his life for us. We remember that love is willing to suffer and die for the beloved.
When to Pray the Sorrowful Mysteries
The Sorrowful Mysteries are traditionally prayed on Tuesdays and Fridays.
They are especially meaningful during:
- Lent and Holy Week (walking with Jesus to the Cross)
- Good Friday (the day of Christ's death)
- Times of suffering, loss, or grief
