The Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary

The Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary

The Luminous Mysteries—also called the Mysteries of Light—were introduced by Pope John Paul II in 2002. They focus on Jesus' public ministry and are traditionally prayed on Thursdays with the rosary.

These mysteries illuminate Christ's mission: to reveal the Father's love and bring light into the world.

The Five Luminous Mysteries

1. The Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan

Scripture: Matthew 3:13-17

When Jesus is baptized by John, the heavens open, and the Father's voice declares: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."

Meditation: The beginning of Jesus' public ministry. We are called to remember our own baptism and to live as beloved children of God.

2. The Wedding Feast at Cana

Scripture: John 2:1-11

At a wedding in Cana, Mary tells the servants: "Do whatever he tells you." Jesus turns water into wine—his first public miracle.

Meditation: Mary's intercession and trust. We learn to bring our needs to Jesus and to trust in his timing.

3. The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God and the Call to Conversion

Scripture: Mark 1:14-15

Jesus proclaims: "The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel."

Meditation: Jesus calls us to conversion—to turn away from sin and toward the light of his truth.

4. The Transfiguration

Scripture: Matthew 17:1-8

On Mount Tabor, Jesus is transfigured before Peter, James, and John. His face shines like the sun, and a voice from the cloud says: "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him."

Meditation: A glimpse of Christ's divine glory. We are reminded to listen to Jesus and to trust in his presence, even in difficult times.

5. The Institution of the Eucharist

Scripture: Luke 22:19-20

At the Last Supper, Jesus takes bread and wine and says: "This is my body, which will be given for you. This is my blood, which will be shed for you."

Meditation: The gift of the Eucharist. Jesus gives himself completely to us—body, blood, soul, and divinity.
